Social Media

Configure Open Graph tags and Twitter Cards for social media sharing.

Open Graph Tags

RationalSEO outputs Open Graph meta tags on every page to control how your content appears when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other platforms that support the Open Graph protocol.

The following tags are generated automatically:

  • og:locale — Your site’s locale setting
  • og:typearticle for singular posts/pages, website for everything else
  • og:title — Uses the same title as the SEO title
  • og:description — Uses the same description as the meta description
  • og:url — Uses the canonical URL
  • og:site_name — Your configured site name
  • og:image — Social image (see priority below)

Twitter Cards

Twitter Card meta tags are output alongside Open Graph tags. The card type is configurable under Settings → RationalWP → SEO → Social → Twitter Card Type.

Two card types are supported:

  • Summary — Small square image with title and description
  • Summary with Large Image — Large landscape image above title and description (default)

Social Image Priority

When determining which image to use for social sharing, RationalSEO checks in this order:

  1. Custom social image override — Set per post in the editor meta box under Advanced Settings
  2. Featured image — The post’s featured image (singular posts/pages only)
  3. Default social image — Configured under Settings → RationalWP → SEO → Social
  4. Site logo — The logo URL from General settings

For taxonomy archives, term-level social image overrides are checked before falling back to the default social image.

  • Default social image: 1200×630 pixels
  • Site logo: 112×112 pixels minimum
